Facebook Wonders if Canning and Gardening Groups Are ‘Too Prepared’

In its relentless efforts to define extremism — and thereby save its members from extremist activities and coercions — Facebook has been asking canning and gardening groups if anyone is “concerned that someone you know is becoming too prepared.”

A screenshot of the notice is making its way around the social media giant. In it, Facebook says, “We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support.” It then offers a tab to click if you are someone who wants to hear stories and get advice from “people who escaped violent extremist groups.”

A Reddit user who posted his own screenshot of the notice said he got it after posting an ad for home-grown beef. According to CNET, a Facebook spokesperson says the extremism “warnings” and offers to “help” are part of the site’s “larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk.”

In early July 2021, WION News said that Facebook told them the offers are “a pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization on the site.”
