New Mom Separated From Her Newborn Because of COVID Test

A California mother whose baby was born one week early was separated from the baby minutes after his birth because she tested positive on a COVID test. The hospital then sent the baby to a different hospital with a NICU.

The mother was forced to stay at the birthing hospital and has not been allowed to see or hold the baby, which was born August 20, 2021. Hospital officials also denied her request to be transferred to the same hospital as her baby.

Both hospitals said they had the same protocols for COVID-positive patients: They must have proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours. Those placed in isolation due to a positive test must wait 10 days or have 2 of 3 COVID tests negative before being allowed out of isolation.
