World Health Organization Isn’t Happy With the U.S.

The WHO is criticizing the U.S. for planning third doses for its citizens while a good portion of the world hasn’t received a first dose. The Biden administration recommended that anyone over the age of 18 who received the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines get a third booster shot — available September 20, 2021.

Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, disagreed. “We’re planning to hand out extra life jackets to people who already have life jackets, while we’re leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket,” Ryan said.

A White House official countered Ryan, saying the U.S. can do both: “To end this pandemic, we have to protect the American people, and we have to continue to do more and more to vaccinate the world,” White House COVID response coordinator Jeff Zients said. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy agreed, saying, “I do not accept the idea that we have to choose between America and the world. We clearly see our responsibility to both.”

According to the report, the U.S. administered 50 million vaccine doses to Americans during summer 2021 while shipping more than 100 million overseas. The U.S. has also donated more doses than all other countries combined.
