Vaccinated Who Get COVID Are Showing Symptoms of ‘Long’ COVID

People in Israel who got COVID despite being vaccinated are showing symptoms of ‘long’ COVID six weeks after infection. A new Israeli study shows that nearly 3% of medical workers contracted COVID-19 after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and 19% of them still had symptoms six weeks later.

Most of those who got sick had mild symptoms, according to researchers, and none were hospitalized and no one who got infected passed the coronavirus on to anyone else.

Scientists said they expected vaccine protection to diminish over time and to be less effective among older people and those with preexisting health conditions, but what was troubling is that young, healthy people got breakthrough infections within a few months of vaccination.

“Coronavirus vaccines were never designed to perfectly protect people against all infections,” Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist who founded and directs the Scripps Research Translational Institute in California, told USA Today.

He added that “Current vaccines are great at preventing serious infection deep in the lungs, but not at blocking infection in the upper airways. What’s needed is a nasal-spray vaccine that would stop the coronavirus from taking hold at all.”
